Textured Tresses 20 Year Anniversary

Twist it! Braid it! Loc it! The celebration of naturally textured hair is more vibrant than ever, with styles such as Locs, Braids, Twists, Cornrows, and Knots gaining widespread recognition from celebrities, athletes, and everyday individuals. However, even with their increasing visibility, many people still struggle with understanding the best practices for caring for, styling, and maintaining textured hair.

That's where Diane Da Costa, a renowned celebrity stylist and master designer of natural hair, steps in with her iconic book, Textured Tresses: The Ultimate Guide to Maintaining and Styling Natural Hair. Published by Simon and Schuster publishing in 2004, this groundbreaking guide marks its 20th anniversary, and this year has become a trusted resource for anyone looking to understand and celebrate the texture they were born with whether it's wavy, curly, very curly, or tightly coiled. When Diane Da Costa’s Textured Tresses was first published, it was ahead of its time -revolutionary. 

At a time when resources on natural hair care were scarce, this book provided the industry with a much-needed framework for understanding and identifying the diverse range of natural hair textures. It broke new ground by offering detailed guidance on everything from recognizing different hair types wavy, curly, very curly, to tightly coiled—to providing practical advice on how to maintain and style each hair texture ; from keeping your hair healthy and strong by using hair products and tools correctly , to managing stress effectively, to selecting the right stylist and salon to suit your hair care needs. 

 As well as introducing those girls to transitioning from chemically relaxed hair to natural hair safely.  For two decades, Textured Tresses has been more than just a guide; it has been a cornerstone for those embarking on their natural hair journey.

This 2024 celebration included Instagram Live sessions on @ddacosta_beauty live story page, a series of discussions with pioneers, celebrity stylists, and writers/authors who influence the natural hair industry. These sessions included three special guests who presented their experiences and perspectives on how Textured Tresses have affected their perception and practice of hair management. Every person, both the famous stylists and the enthusiasts of natural hair, shared their view on how the book has changed the industry and lives of people with hair.

In honoring  and celebrating  her book, Diane Da Costa recently hosted three special Instagram Live discussions. During these sessions, she shared valuable insights about her book and its impact on the natural hair community. She was joined by:

These discussions offered a deep dive into the history, heritage, and future of natural hair care, highlighting the enduring influence of the Textured Tresses Revolution.

 The last event was the book signing which was an in-person event that took place at OMhh Beauty Oasis in Brooklyn on August 2nd. The event, a vibrant party included SimpleeCBD herbal blend pairings, Jamaican lite bites, and Tea & Tingz Hibiscus Ginger Sorrel sparkling wine. People could mingle with like-minded people, have fun, and appreciate the role of the book in embracing and attending to natural textures. This event gave the readers the chance to meet the author, Diane Da Costa and to have their copies of Textured Tresses signed and to get additional information regarding the natural hair care guide that is included in the book. This event was organized by Diane Da Costa’s team in collaboration with OMhh Beauty Oasis.
