NHBC's Appearance On NY 1 IN FOCUS With Cheryl Wills

One of the recent events that contributed to the increased attention to the topic of natural hair care products was the Natural Hairstyles and Braid Coalition (NHBC) appearance on NY1’s ‘In Focus’ with Cheryl Wills. This feature focused on the role of the NHBC and the organization’s current activities in the fight for texture inclusion and the improvements in the regulation of natural hair care.

From the realization of the segment, the representatives of NHBC highlighted several significant achievements they made. They emphasized the importance of the Natural Hairstyling License established in New York State in 1993, which was a crucial first step in legalizing the practice of natural hairstyling. The discussion also brought up the 2017 law by Assemblyman J. Gary Pretlow outlines the requirement of practicing cosmetologists to undertake training on various hair textures and types in their course and licensing exams.

Another focus of the NHBC presentations was their partnership with the NYS Appearance Enhancement NHS Advisory Subcommittee, the target of which was to establish that the organizations provided clear and extensive procedures for texture-specific training in cosmetology education. The appearance on NY1 opened up the floor for the NHBC to continue advocating for people of color to be represented in mainstream beauty standards and workforce. It recognized their responsibility in improving the beauty industry that encompassed lobbying, policy change, education and increasing awareness towards natural hair textures.

While this media coverage served to praise the accomplishments of the NHBC, it also served to remind readers both of the organization’s current relevance in fighting against textured hair discrimination in beauty workplaces and promoting quality duties of care.
